Free Fall

In the state of free fall, an object moves under the sole influence of gravity. No tension, friction, nor any other force pushes and pulls against it. Sans significant resistance, it submits itself to the impulses of a lone, external force.

This series of paper works by Dan Macapugay, Paulu Bruselas, and Imam Santoso posits free fall in similar terms: as a strained state of simultaneous burden, surrender, and reprieve. They take their cue from today’s milieu of tension, where lives are worn down by the weight of the everyday.

Expanding the properties of paper as medium, they render slightness and fragility as opportunities of strength. Their works, in different approaches to the material, explore the act of surrender—whether to rest, faith, or contemplation—as an act of courage as well. Here is life that knows how to bear its weight in steadfast resolve. Yet at the same time, knows when to let go, when to take the fall.
